Fifty-two hours after their infiltration of the Anchor, Adrian had worked himself into a very black mood indeed.

Bex still hadn’t come home. She hadn’t called, hadn’t texted, hadn’t given him the damn time of day. The only reason he hadn’t gotten on his broom and flown out to find her was because Iggs was sending him regular updates on their status and the status of the city.

Apparently, Heaven was taking their explosive exit from the Anchor very seriously. Sorcerers were being brought in from all over the country to increase the Eternal King’s hold over mortal security forces. Not that a sorcerer would be caught dead actually working for the police, but they had enchantments and bespellments active in every department, especially on the port authority officers who were tracking travel. But while this explained why Bex hadn’t risked getting on the ferry yet, it didn’t explain any of her other behavior.

He’d tried his best to stay calm and rational. As far as Iggs knew, the plan was still to come back to the forest when it was safe, which meant Bex would have to speak to him eventually. Until then, Adrian spent his time trying to figure out what he’d seen inside the Anchor.

The black desert was clearly some kind of pocket dimension. The black lines he’d seen in the distance had looked like other chains, so Adrian’s current theory was that all the Anchors were connected through a back area that was monitored by a prince the same way Bex had told him Limbo was. Given how dirty his armor and princess had been, he was clearly in there a lot, but he’d also known Yearling on sight, which meant he must come out and speak with the Anchor managers on a regular basis.

The whole thing reminded him of a municipal infrastructure system with multiple independent facilities run by managers who all report to a single civic authority. That made the most sense given what he’d seen, but Adrian still didn’t understand what all that infrastructure was for. What did the Anchors do? Why were there chains, and what made them so important that Gilgamesh kept one of his own sons on permanent watch? What was so secret about what they were doing in there that the prince had been willing to kill a loyal company man like Yearling just for seeing behind the curtain? What in the world was going on?

Adrian had no idea. He couldn’t seem to get an idea either. The publicly available information about Anchors already wouldn’t fill a nutshell, but there was nothing at all about the golden doors, sin iron, or the black desert.
